EC37 Vs EC38 Trial: 1.125 to 1.25 tapered headtubes

Also, those Intense headtubes were so noodely… And also, those frames might have been welded on Jeff Steber’s kitchen table under the influence of god knows what

I’m in for a 120mm when you run them.

 Thanks for chiming in! PMW is the maching expert, so I trust your judgement here. Also, good call out in the 1-9/16" holesaw. I didn’t realize they made holesaws down to the 1/16 increment

I played around with some headset designs today, and there was no fuctional difference between EC38 or EC37. The bore size does not buy any more space for the bearing (since the bearings hangs outside the headtube).

Now I am back to favoring EC37.

I am curious why Pegoretti and Serotta went with the EC38 standard? Maybe it was a choice to use cheaper Ti tubing? Does anyone have any inside intel?

I also did a few mockups to prove to myself that this standard has aesthetic value:

I will let the jury decide which one looks better.

I was unable to find a source of 1-5/8" Ti tubing thicker than .07in. Then again, I don’t know where to look. Where can I find a good Ti suppliers?

EC37 has a big aesthetic value as frames get smaller, but the payoff is there for larger frames.

For heavy wall titanium tube, we get mill runs from China. The barrier to entry is big $$$ and a lot of time.

I’d be really interested in a 170mm one! Actually two.
Happy to pay monies if you could ship to the EU.

Been waiting for you guys to get into EC37

Thanks

Count me in for a 145mm or 150mm!

Just to throw out an idea- has anyone considered a 37mm integrated headtube, but necked down to a nice, readily available holesaw diameter? Lots of the bmx headtubes go to a 1.5 diameter in the center, I imagine a 37mm HT could be made in a similar profile:

This would be a remix of paragon’s IS41/47 headtube and BFS’ IS42/52 headtube

I recently did a design to test out the concept, and I think it looks pretty good. It could be a good addition to the slim 1.25 tapered ecosystem.

Will do. We can combine with other parts if you need them.

By definition, 37 is an EC (external cup), but in any case, what you’re showing can be done. The HUGE advantage to EC37/37 as described earlier is the availability of a standard tube that requires a minimum of machining. As wall thicknesses increase, so does price. At some point, it’s more economical to buy solid bar and drill it, which negates any advantage from using tubing.

You’re welcome! Please keep us posted on the build. Plenty more if you need them.

@mark_pmw Yes, thanks! After working with tapered HT’s most recently, these are very svelte. As expected the machining is top notch. When you said ‘minimal machining’, I was expecting a nearly raw tube!

Thanks!

Thanks @mark_pmw and the team at PMW for getting this to market. I will try to get some media hype around the standard. I showed John from The Radavist this thread this week, and he was a big fan of going slimmer and sleeker.

HS updates:

White Industries makes a great EC37 headset and is very friendly towards builders.

I am working with some Taiwanese suppliers to design a lower-cost version to help gain more mainstream traction. They already had a design, but the upper cup was a bit bulky. I proposed a slimmer version.

The MOQ is 300 headsets, so the EC37 would need a few builders on board for me to pull the trigger. I will keep exploring this angle, maybe I can find a lower MOQ supplier.

So who makes a 37mm reamer?
