Gravel/MTB Crossover Hot Takes

Rear brakes really aren’t as important as the front one.
In this photo my weight is shifted as far back as possible.

Why are all the slack gravel bikes mostly 29er(with some 27.5 but min of 2.6); while many of the gravel bikes that can fit 27.5x2.4 are more traditional geo or even endurance road bike geo like the Surly Midnight Special or low trail like the Elephant National Forest Explorer or from Crust? Why no slack gravel bike with a 69 hta that maxes out at 27.5x2.4? Is it because all the cool tires coming out usually only come in a 29er, like the Maxxis Aspen ST?

haha awesome picture. It speaks louder than any theoretical argument.

I’d say that’s to do with the slacker bikes being suited to more aggressive riding on steeper/rougher terrain. That’s where a 29" tyre performs noticeably better. Slacker bikes are also longer up front which makes it possible to fit a larger wheel. For more traditional/conservative geo the handling is less noticable and it’s easier to design/build around a 27.5 wheel size.
