The v-brake mount is sweet too. Seen WTP will be releasing a disc trials BMX this year? Would love a pegless+disc+cassette bowl ripper! one finger fufanus here I come.

So I mentioned in another thread that I quite like some of the features (marketing gimmicks) in some Sunday frames.

Currently riding the Sunday Soundwave V3 21"TT. TT and DT are formed in an axial corrugation way, and I rather like the HT gusset. My last WTP frame started cracking along TT gusset welds.

The frame has taken some serious slams straight to coping and keeps on trucking.




Ignore the pink grips… the usual are black ODI longnecks, these are all I had after the the old ones tore.

Ha ya i am the only one I have seen. If i did it would be a nerd fest… and ya fillet brazed chromoly with paragon ht and bb, water jet cut dropouts I had help from @starcycles.

The FBM angel of death was a beautiful example of a double wishbone, top tube pierced by seat tube. My first small batch frame, had to enlarge the dropouts for my 14mm axel-48 hole triple wall rims! Overbuilt was the business, 10mm thick sprocket with a fat chain, sprocket chunks and feeble grinds! This thread almost gets me excited enough to pump up my tires, put my front wheel on, and go cruze a skatepark.

Hi guys, first post here, maybe I should introduce myself on the right topic too.
I’m trying to get people into “made locally bmx frames” here in France, custom for most ,but not an easy task so far :sweat_smile:
I have build a dozen of bmx frames so far, all different one from another so I won’t post them all but I’ll happily answer questions and give details if you’re bmx curious.

For starter here is a 22" disc brake bmx, I call it the lazy bike…you’ll go through any jumps much easier than on a 20

Yes! Heres my people! lol.

While BMX didnt get me into cycling, it did get me into frame building. Have spent the last few years racing and this year little freestyle in my down time. Working my way through my first frame build, pulled a lot of geometry from my ZeroNine OS20 race bike (the one in the first picture) which I have absolutely loved. I’m toying with a lower BB on this one, similar to a Daylight frame, and a slightly longer wheelbase. Really excited to race my own rig around on the national circuit.

Im lucky enough to be based in Nebraska, 30 mins away from the NoWear compound. Not only an amazing place to ride, with an excellent community, but a lot of knowledge and expertise in the BMX world.

Those Sunday formed tubes are cool. Have you seen how Ted James did his? I like his use of a horizontal mill for the tube forming.

The BMX world has so many great fabricators. It’s funny how little crossover there is between the punk rock BMX builders and the fancy frame-building world. We are doing the exact same thing, just different size tubes!

This is such a rad thread! 20 something years ago when I first decided I wanted to build frames, it was Bmx frames that I wanted to build. By the time I finally started building I was riding mountain and road, and in the years since those (and many other non-Bmx styles) are what I’ve done. Lately though, I’ve been rediscovering Bmx and I’m finally thinking that it might be time to build those frames.

There are so many more resources these days for framebuilders, but I haven’t found any great tubing that’s actually available. It seems that the vari-wall stuff is always out of stock for ones and twos, and all of the Reynolds tubes that I’ve found that I think could almost work don’t have quite the right butt profiles. Andrew at bikefabsupply said he’s looking at getting some Bmx-specific velo-spec tubing but that hasn’t happened yet so I’m just wondering what people use and where they get it.

Is Vari Wall still in business?

I use Reynolds 631 for most of my frame, there is a longer butt version that I’m happy with for most of my geo’s and the most affordable option for butted tubing here in Europe.
Velospec and Vari wall are the only options for heat treated butted tubes that would be suitable for a bmx frame.
I know (from social media so don’t take my word for it.) that most of US made bmx with butted tubes are made of Vari Wall (S&M, formerly FBM) or now Velospec (Laird posted about it a while back) but they are too expensive to get here in France.
I’d love to have my tubes made localy…but it’s a different world!

If you want to go with really short toptube ( less than 20.5" ) you would have to go with straight gauge I believe, not really an issue if you’re in the US as 4130 is easily available and not that expensive.

I appreciate what Andrew is doing at @BikeFabSupply for bmx (and all sort of bike actually) and I’m looking forward to see more bmx specific stuff!

Last tip, and that’s just me, you don’t have to use crazy thick tubes, it really depends on what the rider will do with it (read ride jumps, transition and flow around or just huck everything to flat) but I’ve seen too many overbuilt DIY bmx frames …

Anyone remember the solid frame building store?

Ive made a few Bmx frames. Friends still hit me up wanting them but sometimes the reality is you could make literally any other kind of bike and sell it for 5x or as I like to say “what its worth”

Solid still sells frame parts and so does S&M!

My 2 cents on BMX tubing: With thoughtful use of .035” and .049 aircraft chromoly, you can make perfectly light and strong BMX frames. For anything that’s not racing, the dent-resistance of straight gauge tubing is desirable in my opinion.

The mid school 8lb bmx frames featured a lot of huge tube diameters, huge dropouts, .049 tubing throughout, and occasionally .065 tubing. I remember reading a builder hated welding the original Kink Empires because they were ALL .065 tubing! :rofl:
Getting a 5ish pound BMX bike is pretty easy with readily available tubes and components, which is awesome!

FYI, Fairing can make custom-butted and treated tubes. The MOQ is 100, which is reasonable. If there is enough demand for a modern BMX tubeset, this would not be hard to do.

Also, it’s surprising how much Solid’s name comes up. I recently bought an IS headtube from them. They don’t seem to be restocking their parts, which is unfortunate because it seems like they had a lot of useful things for builders.

I met Solid owner Aaron this summer- it sounds like he plans to continue. He works as a full time machinist and does this stuff on the side. You might send him an email? Good to know on the fairing tubing!

Hello fellow bmx enthusiasts!

I spent two hours on the lathe this morning to make some integrated headtube rings. There my solution when I can’t get an off the shelf headtube long enough, there not really time worthy if you can find a CNC made headtube the right lenght.
Here are some process shots, I make them out of 25Crmo4 round stock

Coring out the round stock then cleaning boring pass

45° bearing sit on one face then boring the other face to tube OD ,either 38 or 40mm

Quick filet and ta-daaaa ,IS42 integrated headtube the exact lenght you want ,just need to braze /weld the cups.
