Carbon Seat Tube Strength

Hi All,

I’m working on a project that will incorporate a carbon seat tube into my steel builds and my question is about the strength of the seat tube used in conjunction with the steel sleeves. The tube size I’m looking to use is a 1.072” ID with a 1.259”OD. I’ll be utilizing a 27.2mm post on the builds. I know a lot of builders do carbon seat tubes, but almost all I’ve seen use them as a seat mast with a topper.

Is the strength of the tube I’m looking at using adequate? Forgive my ignorance on this subject. I know nothing about carbon. All advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Brandon

Depends all of the layup and how the carbon fibre is orientated. Basically the wall thickness of 2,4mm you mentioned sounds reasonable if the orientation is somehow okish for a seat tube…

As the properties of CF are dependent of the layup and orientation there is no easy answer to this.

Makes sense. The tube is from Origen and I know it’s been used by a lot of builders.
