Custom Seatpost Binders/Wedges?

Hi all,

Working on a new frame design now incorporating (like many here) a custom 3D-printed seattube cluster, and looking for inspiration for an elegant way to secure the seatpost. Originally was going to go with the Cinelli style fastback approach but because this is a gravel bike, the stays are so far apart it doesn’t look right. Has anyone incorporated a custom seatpost wedge with good success? Obviously this is all an aesthetic choice or else I’d just use a standard binder or clamp, but I love a challenge :).

One that particularly caught my eye is this example from Rizzo Cycles that seems to use some sort of custom turned brass part with a hex screw inside? No visible fastening on the drive side and a simple look on the other. No idea how it works to generate force though! Any ideas?

I think I could accomplish something like this using a more standard wedge approach (like the mass-produced carbon bikes) but wondering if anyone has any hard-earned experience on this so I don’t mess up a bunch along the way!

Appreciate the discussion.

Something off the shelf that gets to the same look as the above (but probably a different execution) is to use this Tarmac seatpost wedge:

Was also used on the Crux which makes me feel better about it for Offroad use. Plus at $30 off the shelf, cheaper than I could make my own

Would love any feedback on anyone who’s tried a wedge system, good or bad!

But how do you imagine the integration into a steel frame?

There used to be stems that used something like this to clamp to the steerer tube. You may have a local bike shop that specializes in used parts/bikes where you could find one of these stems. We do and I did exactly this. I haven’t done anything with it yet but there’s a concept of a plan for a project that is on the list.
