Some good news and a shout out to Protosoon. They had put a vent hole in the rockers prior to printing but closed it off after evacuating the powder. So they agreed the deforming happened during heat treatment. They are printing the rockers again for me. Have to give them a thiumbs up as they have always been super communicative and genuinely looking to provide a better service.

Veery nice! Do you get these heat treated?

I do. They are crazy strong but they machine really well as well.

One thing I’ve been wondering about current MTB geometry, does the crazy steep STA not put a lot of weight on the hands?

Yes, that is kind of the limiting factor for having an even steeper seat tube. It gets uncomfortable pedaling on flat ground. For myself, the sweet spot is around 78-79°

I think 78 deg is about the limit as Luniz said. These days though the hands are higher than in old xc days. I find even with the longer frame reach that I run I’ll scoot back a fraction on the saddle on flat ground, but once you start climbing it does put you in a far better position over the wheels. Helps keep the front tracking nicely and allows a better power delivery. I’ll happily climb for hours on end on the above bike.

I am running an 80° sta on my Enduro bike and would build it the exact same way again. But on flatter terrain it does put more weight on the hands, so on shorter travel bikes I’d build slightly slacker (78° on the downcountry bike I’m building currently).

to throw another datapoint at that conversation, my 140mm trail bike has an effective 83’ sta, and I ride true midfoot cleats, and even then it is too steep, its uncomfortable on the flat at anything less than xc-race-pace pedalling.. {its fine to ride to work, if you’re running really late}

up steep climbs it is amazing. which is 85-90% of the pedalling time for me, but building again id like to be able to come back maybe 10-15mm at the saddle.

Makes sense. My riding is mostly flat so I wouldn’t be riding a big bike like this anyway :laughing:

Front part done. Next will do the swing arm and just waiting on the replacement seat stay cap/brace and rockers.
