Made another one. Frame, fork, handlebars and rear stainless rack all custom made.
Looks great!
What would you say improved on v1?
I made a few rookie mistakes. My head tube wall thickness’s were too thin for fillet brazing two adjacent tubes. The head tubes deformed from the heat. I used a beefier head tube material on V2 and there were no issues with deformation.
I also screwed up my bottom bracket height on V1. I have an Anvil V2 jig that uses chainstay angle to get the BB drop. I got the angle wrong so my BB height was too high.
I have been riding V2 for a month now and it rides beautifully. It fits like a glove and handles 30lbs of groceries easily.
I’m curious your fork angle and offset. I have wanted to build a cargo bike, but am unsure with the extended wheelbase, what I should aim for trail measurement wise.
Can’t comment as to the front end geo Fernando used but I do know Omnium bikes have around 30mm of trail which is low. Below is the BikeCAD of my personal Mini-Max for which I’ve verified the measurements. The bikes handle very well loaded or not!
This is so freaking rad! Really digging that green colour too.
I was shooting for a lower trailer number, I used 30mm fork offset with a 71 degree head tube angle. I like the way it rides. It feels stable and predictable loaded or when empty. If I build another, I’ll probably stick to those numbers.
V1 had more trail and the steering felt less responsive when loaded with a lot of weight (case of beer and a bag of dog food).
Thanks but it’s epoxy primer applied with a brush! I did not take too many close up pictures on purpose. I live in Toronto, which has a very big bike theft problem. I try not to make it look too pretty to keep the thrives looking else where.
My Fauxmnium also has around 27 mm trail with 1:1 steering. It steers quickly, but feels like a normal bike. My other (deli) bike with ~60 mm trail feels much twitchier. I think there is still some room for adjustment after all is built by changing the steering ratio. It’s not the same as trail adjustment, but it affects some similar aspects of the riding feeling - and it’s much easier than a new fork.
The galaxy brain course of action is to build a GT 3D/2x4 style fork with adjustable rake and make it possible to really learn about all of this yourself. I hope to have the capacity to do this myself, but not holding my breath, as this 27 mm trail really works just fine.
