As any space for public discourse develops, there will be a need to be occasionally check-in and make refinements to governing principles. Without occasional updates and rolling changes, rules and norms fail to work well or are simply forgotten. This leads to dissipation or extremism of the polis, tyranny, and overstep by leaders. I am not talking specifically about this forum whatsoever and I am sure you don’t need to look far for an example in your own life!
Here are a few questions that need to be addressed. Please add more.
What is a forum?
What is the purpose of this forum?
Who does it belong to? No one.
What are the expectations for people who participate?
What are expectations for moderators?
Censorship?
This is my pet issue.
I am in favor of rules and norms, and consequences for violating them. I am against almost any censorship.
My faith in this forum was damaged when moderators chose to remove comments that they found objectionable. I would like to see censorship and redaction by anyone but the original poster banned, except in the case of hate speech or fraud, or something close to this. I am not against banning someone for repeated violations of agreed upon rules, but a restrictive filter on speech kills discourse and makes life dull, imo. I have not noticed censorship here since that one incident(but how would I), but it still bothers me that we as a group have not addressed it and proactively stopped it from ever happening again.
It is up to the people who read this forum to cultivate the environment they want. What do you want?
