I bought these quite a few years ago from Omar at Oasis and they were OK for what he charged (cheap) but I found them lacking for extended use. Too crude for my taste, tho I’m admittedly a tool fetishist. They came with big burrs everywhere, so they seemed sort of like a kit for the FB to finish to his liking.
Then I lucked into a used Strawberry LAN71 lug vise (which is the GOAT), at a price I could afford, so I never once used the Oasis vises.
Recently someone was asking about lug vises so I pulled these out to photo, and finally decided to move them along.
These have been extensively worked over by me. Though there’s no comparison to a LAN71, Anvil or Herbie Helm, they’re pretty decent, and they won’t cut your skin every time you touch them (i.e. they’re deburred now!)
I mitered the ends of the inch and the 1-1/8" but not full depth, because Omar said not to. The cones are welded to the threaded shaft only at the end, so if you miter too deep you’ll go through the weld. I think the amount I cut into the cone is OK, but no guarantee. If the weld breaks it’s up to you to fix it. Brazing the cone to the shaft at the other end (small end) of the cone would be easy and strong enough. I strongly believe the weld will not break however, the force on these in use is very light.
I wanted the notch in the cone to always align with the miter, so I pinned it with a taper pin driven in gutenteit (and with Loctite 603, sucka ain’t goin’ nowhere). The taper pin also goes into the shaft, so it’s a secondary way of holding if the weld breaks. Which it won’t! Probably.
I didn’t miter the 1-1/4" because I’m a trad diameters kinda guy — the 1-1/4" is only used to hold the head tube sockets. You can still use it in the DT socket of an OS lug, but the lack of a miter makes for less clear access to parts of the interior. Miter it yourself to match the other two, if that’s your bag, but then it won’t be as good for holding it by the HT socket (see 2nd pic).
$150 includes US shipping. I’ll ship to other countries but then you pay actual shipping.
