Having trouble making icicles

Tried some practice making icicles last night, but didn’t get too far. Not really even ice cubes.

Victor torch. 0 tip. Neutral flame. Gas Flux 3/32 brass rod and brass flux. It has a light blue hue. I do not have an in-line fluxer.

I tried to build icicles, but kept running into this problem where the top surface of the brass blob would develop this crusty layer and not allow more rod to be added. At least easily/what I’m used to.

The internal part of the blob would become plastic and malleable, but the outer crust gave me problems. At times I could grow the blob (you can see the several attempts in the pictures), but not stack on it.

I tried more flux and less flux. Larger flame and smaller flame. Tip closer, tip further away. These things thinking the problem had something to do with heat or impurities. Nothing really seemed to help.

What am I doing wrong?

I see too much heat. It’s tricky to get enough heat to flow off the rod and onto the mound without also over heating the mound so it slumps down. Flicking the flame away is your friend… Have you tried to chase a blob of filler about on a tube with the flame yet too? Andy
