Sputnik cutting fixtures setups

Hi !
I do like Sputnik seatstays/chainstays/unicrown fixtures as those are made from steel so they are rigid and scratch proof. But for now I’m quite long to center those fixtures into the mill.
Please could someone tell me how to do it properly ?
What are the reference points you are using on those fixtures ?

Thank you.

Maybe we could discuss here of any fixture setup. If you believe that’s a good idea I could then update the topic title. Just tell me.

I don’t have any of those fixtures, but find and mark a centerline. And use a center in your machine to line it up to

I turned a center point onto round bar in the diameters of the tubes I was clamping (22.2 round chain stays). Then it’s easy to do the same with the arbor and simply align the two points to each other.

Thank you Hahn. I think I got it but not entirely. Could you post a pic ? Would be nice !

The Sputnik tools definitely have a bit of a learning curve. I use an edge finder on the side and center the fixture in the mill that way. For the seatstay mitering fixture I believe the plate is 5” so I love the table half that to be centered. I do the same for the unicrown fork mitering fixture. As already suggested, once it’s centered you can add a scribe mark to line up with a center point in the quill.

Because i didn’t get any documentation with the fixtures I was planning on writing a blog with photos since compared to others they aren’t as straightforward to set up, imo. But feel free to DM me and I’ll try to answer any questions.

Here is the set up in Seattle. The main tube, and the chainstay fixtures are aligned with the centers. The seatstay fixture has a centerline scribed on the part that is the body of the clamp.

Jeff makes great fixtures but the lack of any documentation really sucks.

Thank you ! That’s inspiring.

@Meriwether The edge of my fixtures are not machined and the axle doesn’t seem’s to be in the center of the plate. That’s why I find it to be long to center the fixtures.

I’ll probably have to mark the center line. I just have to figure how to do it precisely.

Sounds like marking the center with calipers after measuring a ton is the only way then.

But share a photo or two of the fixture/s and maybe that’ll help troubleshoot.
