I have many old Bikecad files on my trusty shop laptop. This laptop is undergoing surgery so I need these files moved online for safe keeping. I have done this without issue in the past, but now ever method I try seems to be running into issues. I get error codes, or a page opens that leads to nowhere, or the file that does upload is empty. Anyone out there have advice on troubleshooting? I am running windows. And the laptop is running all other modern software without issue. I am using pro, and the latest version.
Ideally i’d keep using my BikeCAD Pro account for online storage. There is a “save online” function in the desktop version. In the past it worked well to save backups to the online account. I could download them back to desktop Cad without an form changes, from the desktop BikeCad to the online, then back again to desktop, all within BikeCAD.
Ah, I see.
I’m also on the pro version, but I don’t use the online save function. I save everything locally into a folder that syncs with Dropbox so I have access from both my computers.
Your files are getting saved. You can check the My Designs section of your BikeCAD.ca account to see them.
However, you are correct in observing that I’m currently dealing with some technical issues which I’m in the process of fixing. When you Save a BikeCAD model online, either in the free version in the browser or from the BikeCAD Pro desktop application, the files get saved on the BikeCAD.ca web site and then are automatically uploaded to a CDN (Content Delivery Network). As an aside, I’ve never been entirely sure whether uploading the files to a CDN was absolutely necessary. I could have just perpetually stored the files in a folder on the BikeCAD.ca web site and always referenced them from there. It is clear that this strategy will break down eventually as a web site will reach a point at which there are just too many files in a single folder to reliably manage. However, I still don’t know what that point is. BikeCAD.ca is not Instagram or TikTok. Maybe I could have just stored all these files on the web site. Nevertheless, I have committed to going the CDN route and that has been working reliably for years. Unfortunately, a few days ago, the process of automatically moving the files to the CDN stopped working and I’m currently working to get that back up and running. In the meantime, all the files being saved are still being stored on the BikeCAD.ca website and every now and then I just manually transfer them to the CDN. So if you do save your models online, you may not see them there immediately, but rest assured they’ll be there in a few hours at the latest. Hopefully, I’ll get this CDN transfer issue resolved soon and all of this will be behind us.
On another note, I noticed with some of the files being saved lately, the storage bucket which was added with the Bakfiets feature in version 18 has been appearing in some models where I don’t imagine it’s desired. You can turn off the bucket in the Racks dialog box (that’s the one that controls racks, panniers, lowriders and other cargo).
That is super helpful and makes me feel a little less insane! I checked just now and the files are now complete (last night they would show up in an incomplete, empty form). Thank you!!
