I just bought a steel cast Long Shen dropout. I have only used regular steel dropouts previously - always Tig welded. What is best practice for something like this cast steel dropout? Can I tig weld it like usual or is brazing better practice? Any concern for cracking with tig welding? Does cast steel behave like regular steel? Thanks for any insight, Daniel
I’m also interested in answer to this question.
hi Daniel,
These dropouts are cast from steel (not cast iron); so yes, they are weldable. It would be a good practice to sand the dull gray off the surface of the casting until you see bright silver to be sure you avoid any impurities in your weld.
thanks, Carl

It depends on the rest of your assembly.
But - until more details are available, I’d suggest brazing.
