Welder starts arc at very high amps regardless of setting

Hello! Not-so-Noob tig welder here wondering about an issue with my Primeweld 220 Tig welder (or maybe i’m still a noob). The start of the arc is always very high amps - which if im not careful will burn holes in thin tubing. For example if I set my amps at say 50, the arc start is atleast 70-80amps based on how bright it is and the puddle/hole it causes. Slowly tapers off in 3-4 seconds.

I’ve learnt to start at a thick side, hover for a little (3-4seconds) to let the arc settle then move it to the thin tubing. Is this just a thing with all welders or can I pay more to fix it? Really annoying!

I’ve never used one of those machines personally, but look for a setting or knob called “start current” or similar.
May need to check the manual for it to see if they call it something else.
If that machine has that option it could just be set too high, causing the problem you’re describing.

Thanks @ben.land101 ! I spoke to primeweld support and they help me fix the “HF Arc Start” calibration which was off from the factory - resulting in a gigantic arc! All good now. You have to open up the welder and adjust the gap between these carbon arc rods.
