If nobody local wants to ship you a box of scraps, Aircraft Spruce and many others offer bargain bags/boxes of offcuts that are pretty good for this!
In Dallas, you should have access to local steel distributors as well as a local branch of Online Metals - if you just email them that you’re looking for a box of alloy steel tube scrap and can do a local pickup, they’ll sometimes let you just pull out of the offcuts boxes. Depends on the day/person, YMMV.
