Zero-reach, high stack stem for hard-riding old lady

Stem-makers advice please.

Wife Laurie just bought an e-bike, a Marin Lombard drop-bar gravel bike that needs adapting to her, at 74 y.o. and with neck problems, needs the bars higher and closer to her.

I’ve determined that zero reach will work, i.e. bars centered right over the top of the steerer, tall enough to put the bars higher than the saddle. Don’t judge, you will get old too someday (if you’re lucky!)

I assume I will make a clamp to hold the headset preload, adjust the headset with the stem off, tighten the clamp, then mount the stem.

Anyone try this? Do you see a flaw in my reasoning? I haven’t made a stem in ~30 years.

I will probably “just do it” tomorrow unless I hear from you guys some reason I shouldn’t. I think I have the sizes of CrMo tube I need, pinch bolts etc., in my current stock.

Oh wait, 1-1/4” handlebar so stupid. 26 mm was always strong enough for me, a 250 lb sprinter and one-time Norba pro, so why does a 130 lb old lady need 1-1/4”? Oh well I can’t “sweep back the tide”, bikes are stupid now, just deal with it… So I may have to order some 1-3/8” x .065” for making the handlebar clamp, probably not a size I have in stock.

Unless you guys have a better idea for a handlebar clamp in steel? PMW stem clamps seem to be out of stock. I’m not qualified to make an aluminum stem, gotta be CrMo. I suppose I could make it for 26 mm bars, but then I have to untape the existing bars, move the brake levers over etc. Actually now that I type that, it isn’t that much work, and we have handlebars, so maybe 26 mm is the answer. Am I correct that the only reason for 1-1/4” is cabron bars?

Or any other ideas, like does someone make a stem that’ll do this, without making me dig out my brazing equipment? I am fairly lazy.

Thanks for any advice.

Mark,

There are a bunch to choose from today -

Excellent! Thanks Kirk, you rule.

The Discord Creemee (or Chromo Creemee) looks perfect, let’s see whether I can buy one or build one quicker. Laurie is eager to ride her new bike.

Though I am not involved anymore, I think Pacenti Cycle Design is (or will be launching) a 10mm extension version of the PDent system this year.

This will work, but I think there is a better way. You could make your stem so that there is a preload bolt available down the center of the stem when the handlebar is removed.

I can think of two advantages. One is that you have more clamp surface area so the headset is less likely to come out of adjustment. The other is that you can more easily adjust preload if necessary once the bars are installed.

I made a stem like you mentioned some years ago and it works fine.

But @bulgie could also make a stem with an integrated nut/thread to tighten the headset from below the forkcrown so you do not to have to remove your bars for preloading.

Thanks Alex and Thom. Incorporating the headset preload into the stem complicates the stem, and I’m not sure if the benefits are worth it. I don’t think I’ve ever had a headset that needed adjusting after I adjusted it right the first time. Does this happen often to other people?

Anyway it’s moot, since I have ordered a Creemee stem from Analog. So that makes it no longer a framebuilder question, just a bike mechanic question, and this is the wrong forum for that. So I’ll shut up about it now.

Thanks again to everyone who replied.

Thom that stem is awesome! Love the silver brazed lug to accommodate a compression screw- brilliant!
I don’t need one but I want to build one! :joy:

I have this in stock. I’m home all evening if you want to pop by. Have you seen the price of steel lately?? Pfft, it’s about as expensive as having a 1” steerer threads extended a bit…

For those not in on the joke — Duane and I have been planning for him to borrow my steerer-threading die for a bike he’s working on.

Duane, since I decided not to build the stem, you’ll just have to accept “free” as the price of borrowing the die. Firm price, final offer. Oh well I guess you could force a short chunk of the tube on me, I might need it someday…

HAHA   As I said before, no rush.
