One more bit of practice:
This side was a mess
But on this side it was starting to look quite promising! I actually remembered to turn the piece so I’m feeding the material down into the V between the tubes.
And then the problems with the undersized gas bottle got really bad. I’m using up the mini bottles that originally came with my cheap torch kit but it’s time to buy a proper bbq sized propane bottle. I’m starting to get a little confidence that my torch is capable of brass brazing with this larger upgraded nozzle though! As long as the gas bottle isn’t too cold I had no trouble bringing this 1.2mm thick tube up to temperature and I had some headroom.
That brings me to the reason I started practicing my fillet brazing again.
I have this 90s MTB frame with Tange tubing, lovely double oversized butted front triangle but an afwully heavy rear end with massively oversized seatstays.
I’ve already put a 650b front wheel in which works like a charm!
Now the plan is to hack off the rear end and braze on my own with these much lighter Zona MTB chainstays and lighter seatstays! And at the same time move the rear axle up by 15mm to accommodate a 650B rear wheel for a full 650B setup. 400mm drop bars, Rival 1x11 and some sort of 650B x 42ish very fast tires should make this one wicked fast gravel bike, I’m very excited!
