UDH - Standard or Scam?

Hey all, I’m very very late to the conversation here. I see Daniel already posted a link to the dropout we just released. If any of y’all have any questions or feedback I’d love to hear it. Cheers

Anyone seen this tidy UDH from Baum?

I was really curious when I saw that. Having done way too many UDH sub assembly designs, I have a feeling that this might not be UDH compatible, only Transmission compatible. I can’t seem to visualize where the fin of the hanger would go. Totally armchair engineering here. Either way, it looks great.

Here are more angles from https://escapecollective.com/handmade-bicycle-show-australia-2023-part-one/

Yes, just transmission. Just cut the fin off if you really want something else to shift with.

Looks like Kris at 44bikes has a proto in the works. Maybe @HanderhanCycles can give info unless there is IP involved.

Honestly I have not taken the deep dive into understanding the UDH standard yet, so I really don’t know much about these other than their overall shape. It’s all Kris’s design, I am just machining them for him.

The promise of UDH as an always available derailleur hanger replacement is seeming a bit more hollow

We have a few in stock…

I of course found out about this a day after placing a PMW order

I’m pretty sure sram has them in stock.

whoops, nope, not anymore :frowning:

Wha? Directly from? What witchcraft is this?

First it was flat mount dropouts, then sliding dropout inserts, then the rocker insert… and now we are prototyping this…

So exciting!!! I know this may be tough to answer, but do you have an estimate when these will be ready to test out in metal? I’d love to put one on my MADE show bike!

We’ll have titanium in time for MADE. We’ll do steel as soon as possible after that, with a goal of getting them to builders in time for the show.

@mark_pmw @manzanitacycles did you all see Cameron’s Transmission Dropout? Such an elegant design and a unique take with reducing the forward stop contact to just the hood in order to make the diameter smaller.

Falconer’s Transmission Dropout

I personally would really advocate for Paragon to design a TDH (Transmission Derailleur Hanger) that meets the specs and needs of the Transmission Rear Derailleur but ignores the UDH fin and overly large forward rotation stop. That would allow for a similar dropout to Cameron’s and solve a lot of problems for builders.

Might be a hot take but I don’t think anyone really cares about being able to use the UDH, They just want to be able to run Transmission down the road if they choose.

Now that’s what I’m talking about!

Small, light, concentric, and still able to use the UDH hanger so it’s compatible with all the drivetrains.

Looks like Cam offsets the chainstay at the dropout. That’s where my design failed. I tried to attach the chainstay with zero offset. That meant the flange was too low and interfered with the derailleur.

Looks like an easy part to machine too!

Totally, The caveat with Cameron’s design is that the UDH fin needs to be filed off in order to use the hanger. Thus my request for paragon to make a TDH with no fin. The forward rotation stop on the hanger could also be made smaller and lighter.

It looks like the fin is still intact in the video. The fin just doesn’t have anything to butt up against, which isn’t a problem. Or am I missing something?

EDIT: Nevermind. He mentions that the fin needs to go. Good riddance if you ask me :yum:

He made the hood flange wider on the inboard side so the hanger isn’t actually sitting all the way in the dropout. Hard to see from the image
